Catchment

Dreel Burn, East Neuk of Fife. Heavily modified watercourse. Designated Nitrate Vulnerable Zone (NVZ). Poor ecological status due to channelisation, abstraction and diffuse pollution.

Microclimate

Gulf Stream-moderated maritime. Damaging Haar sea-fog and salt-laden spring easterlies directly reduce marketable yield grade on prime soft-fruit and arable land.

Investment context

DBIRP / FCCT Dreel Burn Investment Readiness Partnership. Targeting public, philanthropic and private natural capital investment. Farmer cooperative structure to reduce individual entry costs.

ShieldBelt backbone

The recommended default, HV2 Hedge and margin (a 2 m species-rich hedge on a 6 m strip), takes about 0.6 ha per km out of production — about £420 per km per year of gross margin on a general cropping farm (less where a margin is already left uncropped). HV1 Fence-line hedge (3 m strip, about 0.3 ha and £210 per km per year) has the smallest land take of the woody options.

How to use this guide

This guide connects every identified farm operational problem in the Dreel Burn catchment to the full set of available solutions — across six solution categories. The Problems section is indexed by pressure type (Water, Soil, Climate, Biology, Compliance, Social, Economic, Biodiversity, Livestock, Carbon). Each problem card shows the farmer diagnosis, five solution pathways, and direct links into the solution directory.

HEDGEROW_SPARSE

Farm has inadequate hedgerow network – fields large and open, poor habitat connectivity

Root: Historical removal of hedgerows during farm intensification; insufficient replanting Biome: Dreel Burn Catchment Farm type: General Cropping, Arable, Dairy
Open fields with no hedgerows are exposed to wind erosion, have low biodiversity, and struggle to meet the Whole Farm Plan biodiversity audit requirements. A hedgerow network can pay back through shelter, AECS payments, long-term soil protection and, once a validated project is in place, carbon income.
AgronomicCompanion Cropping / Intercropping as a short-term connectivity measure
InfrastructureBeetle banks as interim linear habitat before hedgerows establish
Precision TechDrone LiDAR mapping to identify optimal hedgerow locations based on slope and flow paths

ASH_DIEBACK

Ash dieback disease killing mature ash trees in hedgerows and woodland

Root: Hymenoscyphus fraxineus fungal disease; ash historically dominant in East Neuk hedgerows and dens Biome: Dreel Burn Catchment Farm type: General Cropping, Arable, Mixed
Ash dieback is reshaping hedgerows and woodland across Fife. Infected trees should be retained as standing deadwood where safe (invaluable for bats, woodpeckers, fungi) and gaps replanted with disease-resistant species. This is actually an opportunity to diversify your hedgerow from monoculture hawthorn/ash into a genuinely species-rich native mix.
AgronomicReplanting with resistant/alternative native species: rowan, hazel, wild cherry, bird cherry, crab apple, guelder rose
InfrastructureDeadwood retention zones; new hedgerow planting to replace lost structure
Precision TechThermal imaging drones to identify standing deadwood extent and bat roost potential
CommunityWhatsApp group with beekeepers and bat groups to coordinate deadwood retention; FAS advice

PEST_APHID

Spending a fortune on aphid sprays

Root: Lack of predatory insect populations (e.g., ladybirds) Biome: East Neuk Coast, Howe of Fife & Eden Farm type: Cereals, General Cropping
Aphicides are expensive. A species-rich hedge such as HV3 Wide wildlife hedge bridges the 'hungry gap' for predatory insects like ladybirds. By providing winter shelter, it supports predators close to your crop, which can help keep aphid numbers in check.
AgronomicCompanion Cropping / Intercropping to confuse insect pests visually and olfactorily.
InfrastructureEstablish beetle banks in the center of large arable fields.
Precision TechDrone-based multispectral imaging to spot crop-stress early.
CommunityEngage with LEAF to certify pesticide-reduction efforts.

🐛
POOR_FRUIT_SET

Fruit isn't setting right / need more bees

Root: Pollinator deficit during crucial flowering windows Biome: East Neuk Coast Farm type: General Cropping
Soft fruit needs continuous pollinator activity to set properly. This strip provides nectar from early spring through to autumn, supporting bumblebees close to the crop.
AgronomicUndersow crops with flowering clovers to sustain wild pollinators.
InfrastructureBring in commercial bumblebee hives during peak blossom.
Precision TechAutomated yield monitoring to identify field zones suffering from poor fruit set.
CommunityCommunicate spraying intentions with local beekeepers.
Emerging TechAcoustic & Laser Pest Deterrents (Netherlands) to protect fruit from birds.
🐛
BIODIV_AUDIT

Supermarkets/Auditors demanding more biodiversity

Root: Low habitat distinctiveness score on farm Biome: All Farm type: All
Supply chains and supermarket buyers are getting aggressive about farm biodiversity scores. Planting a species-rich hedge (HV4 Hedge with trees has the highest SSE hedgerow distinctiveness) improves habitat and hedgerow condition scores over time, which supply-chain audits increasingly look for.
AgronomicDelay cutting grass margins until late summer to allow seed set.
InfrastructureIn-Stream Large Woody Debris (LWD) to restore river habitats.
Precision TechAcoustic monitoring sensors to record bat/bird calls for auditors.
CommunityHost farm walks for local schools.
Emerging TechPrairie Strips (Iowa STRIPS project) - integrating 10% native botany into crops.

CARBON_BASELINE

No carbon audit in place / farm not yet measuring or managing its carbon footprint

Root: Carbon auditing not yet mandatory; limited farm advisory support; cost and complexity Biome: Dreel Burn Catchment Farm type: General Cropping, Arable, Dairy, Horticulture
Businesses claiming the Basic Payment must complete a carbon audit by May 2028 under the Whole Farm Plan. Starting now gives you time to make changes that reduce your footprint and to explore carbon income: ONCRA for hedges and field margins, and the Woodland Carbon Code for woodland.
AgronomicMinimum Tillage; Cover Crops; Multi-Species Herbal Leys; legume integration; organic matter additions
InfrastructureHedgerow creation; riparian woodland; native woodland creation

HAAR_SALT

The Haar and salt-spray is burning my brassicas

Root: Coastal wind-shear and salinity Biome: East Neuk Coast Farm type: General Cropping
The Haar carries salt particles that burn brassica leaves and set broccoli heads unevenly. A 12m porous belt raises the airstream over the crop rather than blocking it, so more of the salt deposits on the belt rather than on your plants.
AgronomicSelect hardier crop varieties for the most exposed eastern fields.
InfrastructureErect temporary artificial windbreak netting (Paraweb).
Precision TechHyper-local weather stations to predict Haar events.
CommunityNone directly applicable.
Emerging TechSaline Seed Priming (Netherlands) to make standard crops resistant to salt-shock.
🌬️
WINTER_CHILL

Losing lambs to the wind and cold / feed bills too high

Root: High-altitude exposure causing thermal stress Biome: Lomond & Cleish Uplands Farm type: LFA Grazing
Every degree of wind-chill burns your sheep's winter fodder just to keep them warm. A targeted snow-fence breaks the upland gales, which can improve your flock's feed conversion and lamb survival without taking up prime grazing.
AgronomicAdjust lambing dates; integrate Silvopasture to provide 3D thermal buffering.
InfrastructureBuild permanent roofed lambing sheds.
Precision TechThermal imaging drones to identify the coldest parts of the hill.
CommunityLocal sheep-worrying awareness campaigns.
Emerging TechSmart thermal rumen boluses (SmaXtec is one example) to flag cold stress early.
🌬️
SUMMER_HEAT

Cows dropping milk yield on hot summer days

Root: Heat stress due to lack of canopy shade Biome: West Fife Claylands, Howe of Fife & Eden Farm type: Dairy
At 20 degrees, a dairy cow starts suffering heat stress and drops milk yield. Mature shade trees create a cool microclimate, allowing them to ruminate comfortably out of the direct sun.
AgronomicIntegrate Silvopasture; shift dairy grazing to cooler evening/night hours.
InfrastructureInstall heavy-duty fans and misting systems in collecting yards.
Precision TechSmart collars to detect heat stress early via rumination drops.
CommunityNone directly applicable.
Emerging TechSmart thermal rumen boluses (SmaXtec) to detect core body temp spikes.
🌬️
VALLEY_FROST

Late spring frost pockets killing early growth

Root: Cold air pooling in valleys Biome: Howe of Fife & Eden Farm type: General Cropping, Cereals
Cold air rolls down the hills and pools in the Howe of Fife, creating lethal frost pockets for early growth. Placement matters: a belt across the slope can dam cold air and make a frost pocket worse, so site it to let cold air drain past the crop.
AgronomicAvoid planting sensitive early crops in the lowest topographical dips.
InfrastructureEnsure cold air drainage pathways are kept clear of brush.
Precision TechDeploy orchard frost-fans or heaters for high-value fruit.
CommunityNone directly applicable.
Emerging TechHyper-Local IoT Microclimate networks to trigger automated frost protection.

NVZ_LETTER

SEPA is on my back about nitrate levels

Root: Subsurface nitrate leaching into watercourses Biome: Howe of Fife & Eden Farm type: General Cropping, Dairy
SEPA nitrate rules are tightening. Start with nutrient planning and fertiliser timing. Along ditches, a willow-led wet strip (native willows, with alder kept to 10–20%) can take up some nitrate from shallow drainage water; alder fixes nitrogen and can add nitrate (UK Forestry Standard riparian woodland guide, 2024). Woodchip bioreactors on tile drains treat drain water that would otherwise bypass a buffer.
AgronomicImplement rigorous Nutrient Management Planning (NMP); NZ Nitrogen capping strategies.
InfrastructurePermeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs) / Woodchip Bioreactors to intercept tile drainage.
Precision TechN-Sensors for variable-rate nitrogen application.
CommunityFAS compliance audits.
Emerging TechSaturated Riparian Buffers (Iowa) to route tile drains into soil profile; Plasma Slurry treatment (Norway).
⚖️
FIO_BEACH

Blamed for local beach bathing water failures

Root: Fecal Indicator Organisms (FIO) in surface runoff Biome: East Neuk Coast Farm type: Dairy, LFA Grazing
Protecting the local Blue Flag beach is critical. A wide, densely sown grass buffer can trap part of the manure-borne bacteria in surface runoff and give them time to die off before they reach the watercourse. Keeping stock and slurry away from the water matters most.
AgronomicExclude livestock from riparian zones entirely.
InfrastructureOffline Treatment Wetlands & Sediment Ponds to settle pathogens.
Precision TechTrack exact slurry application zones via GPS.
CommunityAlign with FCCT to protect local Blue Flag beaches.
Emerging TechFungal Bio-Filters (Rhizocore) inoculated into buffers to bind pathogens.
⚖️
SPRAY_DRIFT

Can't spray my fields when it's windy without drifting

Root: Unbuffered field margins adjacent to sensitive areas Biome: Forth Urban Coast, East Neuk Coast Farm type: Cereals, General Cropping
You lose valuable spraying days waiting for the wind to drop so you don't drift onto roads or neighbors. A porous screen cuts wind speed downwind and can catch some drift, which may give you more spraying days. It does not replace the buffer zones on product labels or LERAP rules.
AgronomicSwitch to low-drift nozzles and coarser spray qualities.
InfrastructureEstablish a permanent 5m uncultivated buffer zone next to roads.
Precision TechPWM (Pulse Width Modulation) sprayer tech to maintain droplet size.
CommunityWhatsApp group with neighboring beekeepers/properties.
Emerging TechAI-guided spot spraying (SoilEssentials is one supplier) to reduce spray volume where weeds are patchy.

CARBON_INCOME

I want to earn money from Carbon Credits

Root: Interest in carbon income from new planting Biome: All Farm type: All
Carbon income is possible but not automatic. New woodland that meets the Woodland Carbon Code's eligibility rules can be registered with the Code; hedges, field margins, coppice and fuel crops are not eligible for it. Hedge and margin carbon may be sold as ONCRA Potential Units, which carry contribution claims only, once a project has been validated. Prices are illustrative until a buyer is contracted, and grant funding can affect eligibility, so take advice before signing anything.
AgronomicAdopt minimal till and bale grazing to help build soil organic carbon (SOC) over time.
InfrastructureNone directly applicable.
Precision TechDeep-core soil testing mapped via GPS.
CommunityEnsure planting complies with WCC community consultation.
Emerging TechBiochar/advanced digestates (Carbogenics is one example) for long-lived carbon storage; selling removals needs certification.
💷
DIESEL_COSTS

Burning too much red diesel fixing ruts and gullies

Root: Mechanical intervention required to fix water erosion Biome: North Fife Hills & Tay Farm type: Cereals
Grading soil back up the hill every spring burns thousands of liters of red diesel. Fixing the erosion at the source with a cross-slope hedge helps stop gullies forming in the first place.
AgronomicCombine operations (e.g., drill and fertilize in one pass); Argentine Direct Drilling.
InfrastructureGrade farm tracks to reduce rolling resistance.
Precision TechGPS auto-steer to reduce overlap.
CommunityMachinery rings.
Emerging TechAutonomous Lightweight Robotics running on solar power.
💷
HEATING_BILLS

Heating the sheds/farmhouse is costing a fortune

Root: Need for cheap, sustainable on-farm biomass Biome: All Farm type: Dairy, General Cropping
Gas and oil for the sheds are squeezing margins. A dedicated biomass coppice strip gives you a fast-growing, renewable supply of woodchip to feed the farm boiler every 3 to 5 years.
AgronomicNone directly applicable.
InfrastructureUpgrade shed insulation; install biomass boilers.
Precision TechSmart thermostats and zoned heating controls.
CommunityCommunity energy schemes.
Emerging TechBiochar additives to Anaerobic Digesters to max out biogas yields.

LIVESTOCK_RIPARIAN

Cattle/livestock accessing burns and ditches, causing bank erosion and diffuse pollution

Root: Unfenced watercourses; no standoff infrastructure; intensive grazing pressure on riparian zones Biome: Dreel Burn Catchment Farm type: Dairy, Mixed
Unrestricted livestock access to burns is one of the biggest sources of diffuse pollution in Fife and can trigger SEPA enforcement. Fencing the burn, combined with a standoff pad and riparian planting, is a low-cost way to protect your water quality and reduce your regulatory risk, and can support biodiversity funding and, through a validated project, carbon income.
AgronomicRotational Mob-Grazing to reduce continuous bank pressure; shift dairy grazing to night away from burn areas
InfrastructureNZ-style Woodchip Standoff Pads at key water access points; fencing setback from bank
Precision TechGPS-collared virtual fencing (Halter / Nofence) to dynamically exclude from riparian zones
CommunityCatchment-level water abstraction groups; FIO beach monitoring coordination with SEPA

DOG_WORRYING

Walkers and off-lead dogs getting into livestock fields

Root: Permeable physical boundaries Biome: Forth Urban Coast, East Neuk Coast Farm type: Dairy, LFA Grazing
Farming next to towns means dealing with trespass and off-lead dogs stressing livestock. Once established, a dense, thorny wildlife hedge is a stock-proof barrier that can be cheaper to maintain over the long term than wire fencing.
AgronomicMove pregnant ewes away from fields with public footpaths.
InfrastructureUpgrade fencing to high-tensile wire; secure gates.
Precision TechRemote trail cameras to monitor trespassers.
CommunityInstall NFUS educational signage.
Emerging TechVirtual Fencing (Nofence / Halter NZ) to dynamically move stock away from walkers.
🤝
URBAN_POLLUTION

Road dust and noise making fields next to town useless

Root: Proximity to urban infrastructure (PM2.5) Biome: Forth Urban Coast Farm type: Cereals, General Cropping
Farming next to the ring road brings exhaust dust and trespass risk. A dense, thorny 3D canopy acts as both a physical barrier to keep people out, and a filter that traps some PM2.5 particulates before they reach your fields.
AgronomicAvoid growing high-value aesthetic leafy greens directly adjacent to roads.
InfrastructureErect solid boundary fences to deter fly-tipping.
Precision TechNone directly applicable.
CommunityEngage with the local council regarding road-sweeping.
Emerging TechPlasma slurry treatment (Norway; emerging) to reduce manure odour near towns.

🌱
TOPSOIL_LOSS

I'm losing my best topsoil down the hill

Root: Cross-slope sediment erosion Biome: North Fife Hills & Tay Farm type: Cereals, General Cropping
If heavy October rain is stripping topsoil off your slopes, a contour swale acts as a physical trench and tree-root barrier. It catches the mud and water mid-field, keeping your prime topsoil where it belongs.
AgronomicPlough across the slope; establish Prairie Strips (N. America) across 10% of field area.
InfrastructurePhysical bunds or French drains at the field edge.
Precision TechYield mapping to convert unprofitable eroded areas.
CommunityKeep soil out of local fishing rivers to avoid SEPA fines.
Emerging TechFish-scale terracing (China) for steep North Fife Hills tree planting; Argentine Zero-Tillage.
🌱
COASTAL_ERODE

Losing field edges to the sea/estuary

Root: Riparian/coastal bank destabilization Biome: East Neuk Coast, Forth Urban Coast Farm type: General Cropping, LFA Grazing
Winter storms and high tides are physically eating your land. A coastal wood can help bind the soil and cut wind exposure, but it cannot hold back the sea on its own. Coastal sites need site-specific design and may need consents.
AgronomicRetreat arable operations from the immediate cliff/estuary edge.
InfrastructureInstall soft-engineering coastal defences (e.g. willow spiling), designed for the site and with the necessary consents.
Precision TechSatellite imagery to track erosion rates and predict future loss.
CommunityEngage with FCCT regarding rerouting eroded footpaths.
Emerging TechEngineered salt-marsh restoration to absorb wave energy.
🌱
COMPACTION_POACH

Cows are poaching the ground around the gates/troughs

Root: High livestock hoof-pressure on wet soils Biome: West Fife Claylands, Lomond & Cleish Uplands Farm type: Dairy, LFA Grazing
Livestock gathering around gates in wet winters destroys the soil structure. A shallow-root shrub buffer combined with a hardstanding area gives you a sacrificial zone that recovers quickly without ruining field drainage.
AgronomicImplement bale grazing (on suitable soils) and rotational mob-grazing.
InfrastructureInstall hardcore pads around field gates and permanent troughs; NZ-style standoff pads.
Precision TechGPS-collared virtual fencing (e.g., Halter) to dynamically keep cattle off wet ground.
CommunityAvoid poaching near public footpaths to reduce walker complaints.
Emerging TechAutonomous lightweight robotics (FarmDroid is one example) to reduce heavy tractor passes.
🌱
SOILORGAN_LOW

Soil organic matter declining / soils losing structure and water-holding capacity

Root: Intensive tillage, potato/root vegetable production, lack of cover crops breaking down soil aggregates Biome: Dreel Burn Catchment Farm type: General Cropping, Arable
When soils lose organic matter, they lose their ability to hold water, support crop growth, and store carbon. Reduced tillage, cover crops, and multi-species leys work together with linear shelterbelts to protect and rebuild your soil capital.
AgronomicReduced tillage / direct drilling; cover crops; legume rotations; organic manure incorporation
InfrastructureBeetle banks to reduce surface compaction pathways; contour swales to slow water loss
Precision TechDrone LiDAR mapping for compaction zones; N-sensors for variable rate nitrogen
CommunityMachinery rings for sharing min-till equipment; FAS advice on soil carbon audits
Emerging TechBiological Inoculants (mycorrhizal fungi) applied at drilling; Biochar / Advanced Digestates (Carbogenics)

FLOOD_RIP

River bursts its banks and floods my bottom fields

Root: Lack of riparian peak flow interception Biome: Howe of Fife & Eden Farm type: General Cropping, Dairy
When the river bursts its banks, standard grass margins just get wiped out. A Willow Bank Buffer can add site-dependent flow resistance and bank habitat. Any leaky barriers need separate design, evidence and consents; woodland alone does not establish downstream flood protection.
AgronomicShift to wet-meadow grazing/forage rather than prime arable in the floodplain.
InfrastructureLower embankments to reconnect floodplains; channel re-meandering.
Precision TechInstall SEPA telemetry river-level sensors for early warning.
CommunityCoordinate with local flood action groups to align farm management with downstream safety.
Emerging TechSmart/IoT flood attenuation ponds that empty ahead of storms.
💧
FLOOD_SURFACE

Heavy rain creates rivers of mud across the slopes

Root: Unimpeded cross-slope overland flow Biome: North Fife Hills & Tay, Lomond & Cleish Uplands Farm type: Cereals, General Cropping
When heavy rain hits a slope, it builds speed and washes mud right through your fields. A cross-slope barrier acts as a speedbump, dropping sediment out of the water and reducing crop and soil losses.
AgronomicAdopt minimum tillage (min-till) to leave stubble; sow winter cover crops.
InfrastructureCreate a Two-Stage Ditch to hold surge water; WASCOBs (Water & Sediment Control Basins).
Precision TechDrone LiDAR to map exact overland flow paths.
CommunityEnsure mud isn't washing onto public highways.
Emerging TechKeyline Design ploughing (Australia/N. America) to spread water laterally.
💧
DROUGHT_SUMMER

Fields dry out too fast in summer / burns run dry

Root: Poor baseline aquifer recharge Biome: East Neuk Coast, Howe of Fife & Eden Farm type: Cereals, General Cropping, Dairy
With summers getting drier, burns and aquifers are running low. Tree roots and higher soil organic matter can help more winter rain soak in instead of running off. But trees also use water, which can lower summer flows, so the net effect on the burn depends on the site.
AgronomicEstablish deep-rooting Multi-Species Herbal Leys to access deep subsoil moisture.
InfrastructureInstall rainwater harvesting tanks off large shed roofs.
Precision TechSoil moisture probes to optimize irrigation timing.
CommunityParticipate in catchment-level water abstraction groups.
Emerging TechBiological Inoculants (Mycorrhizal fungi) to expand root access to water; Argentine Direct Drilling to maximize moisture retention.
💧
CLAY_WATERLOG

Tractor bogs down in the mud every October

Root: Compacted heavy clay / poor infiltration Biome: West Fife Claylands Farm type: Cereals, Dairy
Heavy Fife clay turns into a poached mess under tractor tires. The deep roots of these shrubs may help open up the pan over time and improve drainage, which could reduce remedial subsoiling.
AgronomicSow tillage radish to biologically fracture the clay pan; Johnson-Su compost teas to rebuild structure.
InfrastructureClear 1970s tile drain outfalls; mole draining.
Precision TechControlled Traffic Farming (CTF) utilizing RTK GPS.
CommunityMachinery rings to access low-ground-pressure (LGP) tracked equipment.
Emerging TechHeavy-Lift agricultural drones (Japan) for seeding/spraying when soil is too wet for tractors.
💧
DROUGHT_BURN

Dreel Burn / watercourses running low or dry in summer – aquatic stress and irrigation risk

Root: Insufficient water infiltration and soil storage capacity across catchment; historical abstraction; climate-driven drought Biome: Dreel Burn Catchment Farm type: General Cropping, Arable, Dairy, Horticulture
When the burn runs low, abstraction licences get harder to obtain and aquatic wildlife suffers. Improving soil infiltration catchment-wide, combined with rainwater harvesting and buffer woodland, is likely to be the most effective way to manage summer water stress.
AgronomicRainwater harvesting (roof-mounted 50,000L systems); irrigation lagoons; reduced summer abstraction
InfrastructureOffline Treatment Wetlands to store and slowly release water; check dams in ditches
Precision TechSEPA telemetry river-level sensors; hyper-local weather stations for irrigation scheduling
CommunityCatchment-level water abstraction groups; coordinated irrigation scheduling across DBIRP farms
Emerging TechSaturated Riparian Buffers (Iowa) to recharge groundwater; Keyline Design to route water across contour

Hedgerow options: hedge width and strip width (v12)

Each hedge option now has two widths. Hedge width is how wide the hedge is managed: a 2 m double row, a 3 m triple row, or a 4.2 m productive triple row coppiced for biochar feedstock. Strip width is the land taken out of production, hedge plus grass margin: it drives water interception, margin habitat and income forgone. All eight presets are species-rich; HV2 is the recommended programme default. The calculator lets you change the form, species, trees, strip width and position. Water values assume the strip lies across the flow path (beside the watercourse for HV7).

Research scenarios, not a current offer or an ONCRA pass. AECS is potential cash; water value is a separate non-cash public benefit. AECS payments are counted where an option could qualify (5-year agreements; competitive, so not guaranteed). Combining AECS with ONCRA needs decisions under Guidelines §§4.2.1 and 8.2.2, including the opportunity to use a grant, which is why the calculator shows the 30-year funding gap with and without grants. Carbon is provisional; the productive hedge needs a coppice/root ledger. SSE HLU and margin BU are separate, with assumed inputs; SPBM consultation units are not interchangeable. AECS assumes an eligible targeted parcel and management; triple-row capital and annual payments and hedge-in-water-margin geometry await RPID. HV3 now models a 3 m managed strip with 2.5 m potentially payable.

AICamera-guided spot spraying can tell weeds from crop and spray only the weeds. Herbicide savings depend on weed density and crop, and vary widely between fields; ask for independent trial results. Product-label and LERAP buffer rules still apply.

💧CLAY_WATERLOG
Fish-scale terracing (China)

Hand-dug, semi-circular catch-pits for planting trees on extreme 30-degree slopes.

AIKeep simple dated records (fixed-point photos, costs, yields or readings) so you can judge whether this works on your farm and support any grant claims. Treat supplier performance figures as claims to check against independent trials.

🌱TOPSOIL_LOSS
Autonomous lightweight robotics (FarmDroid)

Solar-powered autonomous weeding with very light machinery, so little soil compaction.

Liquid Carbon Pathway Management

Focusing on root exudates from living plants to pump liquid carbon directly into the soil microbial bridge, rather than relying solely on decaying plant matter.

AIUse machine learning to analyze soil microbiome tests (like PLFA) over time, correlating biological activity with crop yield to optimize liquid carbon inputs.

🌱SOILORGAN_LOW
Syntropic Agroforestry (Brazil)

A highly dense, succession-based planting strategy that mimics natural forest development, building its own fertility and reducing the need for external fertiliser once established.

AIAI simulation tools can design the complex spatial and temporal planting matrix required for Syntropy, helping plan species succession over a 20-year horizon.

🦋HEDGEROW_SPARSE
Riparian Floating Treatment Wetlands (FTWs)

Floating rafts of native aquatic plants tethered in the deeper parts of the Dreel Burn or irrigation lagoons. Their suspended root networks actively strip out livestock nutrients from the water column.

AIUse drone-based multispectral imaging to monitor the vegetative health of the floating rafts, alerting the farmer when the plants are saturated with phosphorus and need harvesting.

🐄LIVESTOCK_RIPARIAN
Enhanced Rock Weathering (Basalt Dust)

Spreading crushed basalt rock across arable fields. As it weathers, it captures atmospheric CO2 and converts it into stable bicarbonates that wash into the sea, potentially a durable carbon sink, although field measurement and verification methods are still developing.

AISoil pH and mineralogy data can help estimate a suitable basalt application rate. Field measurement of the carbon actually removed is still developing, so treat drawdown estimates as provisional.

🌳CARBON_BASELINE
Genomic Marker Assisted Selection

Rather than planting generic alternative species, sourcing Ash saplings that have been genetically screened and proven to carry the rare genetic markers for Hymenoscyphus fraxineus resistance.

AIBioinformatics AI is used by nurseries to rapidly sequence and identify resistant genomic traits in wild Ash populations, speeding up the commercial availability of resistant stock.
